Let the Kaffe's Broken Dishes Quilt Project Begin!

The Wonky Star Quilt top and back are officially finished and ready for quilting and binding.  It's always fun to finish one project and start with the next one, isn't it?  Here is a picture of the quilt top to the right with all of its many pieces sewn together. The back is a wide Echino green dots print with a strip of leftover Echino squares from the front. All of the squares on the front are made from Echino prints.

Now it's time to have fun with my next project.  I have been waiting to do this particular project for a long time. It's Kaffe's Broken Dishes Quilt from his book Kaleidoscope of Quilts.  Many years ago I bought most of the fabrics for this quilt and put them away for future use!  I am so glad I did that way back when. The picture to the left is of Kaffe's finished quilt straight from the book.  Isn't it gorgeous? I am using Carla Miller's mint green chicken scratch as my quilt back.
The fabrics I was missing (some confetti batik dots,  mint green chicken scratch yardage to use for the back and the wonderful Kaffe pink freckles print) were made available from some wonderful Etsy and Ebay sellers recently.  It would be difficult to find all of the prints that are in this older quilt pattern, but perhaps not impossible if you were patient during your search.  My guess is that acquiring many of these rare and OOP fabrics now would be a little more costly than it was when they were readily available, but the higher costs might be worth it to create a quilt that is this beautiful.

Now it's time to piece the top for Broken Dishes. Talk about a LOT of triangles, oh my! There must be thousands of pieces. I am starting with the outer border blocks as they are a little bit larger than then blocks that make up the quilt's center section. I may stray a bit from Kaffe's composition and placement of the blocks just to make this quilt my own. I plan to use the original fabrics he selected in my quilt. The pictures to the left show the border blocks I am currently piecing and my stack of smaller squares I will be using in the interior blocks.

Happy quilting!
Susan
