Tana Lawn Quilt: Putting the Pieces Together

Image
It's always fun to have enough blocks to play with.  I randomly laid the completed blocks out just to see what the quilt might look like one day.  It looked pretty interesting although I am still missing some pieced squares around the edges.  The dark edge will be completed with half triangles all around the edge of what you see here.  I haven't pieced those guys yet! I need to decide if I am going to enlarge this pattern a bit or perhaps get creative with the edging and binding to add a bit more size in the end. Here's a close look at the shading effect, which is the key element of this very grey quilt! I am really pleased with how the Liberty Tana Lawn greys shade from light on the inside to the much darker border. The medium shades were the hardest ones to come by and I think a few more medium tones might have added a bit more contrast to the gradual fade. I am happy with this project so far, now it's back to piecing more blocks and deciding what, if anything,

Latest Project: Liberty Tana Lawn String Quilt in Greys

Image
Hello everyone!  Sorry I've been away from my quilting blog, but I'm BACK now! I am currently piecing a new quilt that I plan to keep for myself.  It is a string quilt in Liberty Tana Lawn fabric.  I am using mainly grey colors, light to dark, with a little black in there but not much. I started with three piles of strips - light, medium and dark.  Here is the dark pile of Tana Lawn strips. It's even beautiful when it's all jumbled together in strips! I am planning to piece the quilt so that it goes from light colors in the center through light/medium blocks to medium blocks to medium/dark blocks and dark blocks around the edges. Here are the color gradations so far.  They go from dark to light heading left to right, with the transition blocks (dark/medium and medium/light) in the front.  My fabric strips range from 1 1/4 inches to 2 1/2 inches in width. My goodness, this has been a LOT of work! The blocks are coming out quite nicely.  Here is a close-up of a light c

Liberty Tana Lawn String Quilt Underway

Stay tuned for some pictures of the squares for my string quilt that is getting underway.  I have so many Liberty Tana Lawn scraps that I decided to do this quilt using grey fabrics and make it a monster size for our master bedroom.  This should be fun!!! Back later with some details... Susan

Second Time is the Charm!

Image
Well, after a lot of work I have successfully pieced the top of the baby quilt!  My advice for folks using this pattern is to build each flower and then piece as you go versus building all the flowers and hoping that they all fit together as they should.  Ask me how I know this...  In any case, it is an absolutely stunning baby quilt top and I am looking forward to doing the quilting and the binding later on this week. The three colors of background (misty grey, pale yellow and Kona grey) all work really well with the fabric  and the cute elephants in the center of each flower.  The Moda Sunkissed collection makes a great gender-neutral baby quilt, no doubt about it.  Now I just need a baby for the completed quilt. Happy quilting! Susan

Flower Power Blocks

Image
I am having the best time taking a zillion small pieces of fabric and making the flower blocks for my baby quilt. The elephants in the center of the flower are the best. There are seven full flowers like the one pictured and four half flowers for the top and bottom edges of the quilt. This has been fun - I am doing many Y-seams on my Bernina for these flower blocks, and the points of the petals have come out quite crisp. The colors are working out great, I really like the Moda Sunkissed fabric line. The light grey surrounding the flowers is the Misty Grey solid from Moda, it was a bit challenging to find this solid shade online.  And the elephants speak for themselves, they are too fun. Stay tuned and happy quilting! Susan

Ginger's Quilt Ready for Its New Home

Image
Well, Ginger's quilt is back in Colorado, beautifully quilted and bound by Jennet. Kitty approves of the finished product, so much so that he made it his favorite sleeping spot on Friday afternoon. Here is kitty having a rest on Ginger's quilt while it was laying across the back of the couch ... I don't know what it is about Maine Coon cats, but they are always ready for an impromptu photo shoot! This quilt looks so much prettier with the texture added by the batting and the quilting pattern, the extra dimension took me by surprise!  Combine that texture with such fabulous fabrics and you really get the 'wow' factor.  Here's a look at the front and the back, along with my husband's tennis shoes as he is heading out for a run.  Maybe Ginger won't like this quilt and will ask me to take it back... not! Here's a look at the back, too, which was also fun to do. The black and white dot stripe matches the binding fabric. Well, that's all for this

Cutting Pieces for a Baby Quilt

Image
One of the best things about completing a quilt is selecting and starting your next quilt! I have decided to make a baby quilt next.  I plan to quilt and finish this little guy myself as it will be about 3 feet square when it is done. I am not even sure who I will give this quilt to, but I betcha someone who is expecting will turn up soon.  I am using the large Japanese elephant fabric in grey for the centers of the patterns (the pattern is like a lot of flowers) and the gorgeous Moda Sunkissed fabrics in pinks, greys, greens, oranges and yellows.  Here's a look at my flower petal pieces.  I will cut the background pieces in the next few days but they will be pretty boring - they are all solid colors!  More later! Finished Ginger's Aboriginal Print Quilt

Image
Ginger's beautiful quilt has been pieced and will be heading out to get quilted tomorrow. The quilt top is made of Australian aboriginal prints combined with a forest green Echino solid. The binding will be a black and white dot.  I can't wait to see the finished product! Here's a sneak peek at the quilt top after the prints had all been put together. It is missing the green edge and the top/bottom strips with the lighter colors. Happy quilting! Susan

Sand Castle Quilt

Image
It's always nice to have a finished quilt hanging around for a few days. This most recent project is a quilt for my granddaughter who turns 3 this week. I used the Heather Ross Far Far Away 2 fabric from Fabricworm and the Chasing Cottons Sand Castle quilt pattern to make a wonderful quilt for her bed. Since my Bernina and I aren't the best at quilting large items, I sent the quilt out for custom longarm quilting from Icepurplepenguin , and Jennet did a stunning job making everything work together. The little hearts in the quilting pattern are just wonderful. Here is a picture of the entire quilt laying in the entry with me looking down from the stairs. Quilt Top View Here is a closer view of a few of the cute little castles with their towers, battlements, and front doors. Closer view of the castles And last but not least, here is a picture of the back of the quilt. It is also made from FFA2 fabric, and is half the little yellow moons and half the lavender
